Our Community

Located in the center of North Carolina, Chatham County is the 20th largest county in North Carolina and has one of the state’s fastest growing populations. Within its 709 square miles (692 square miles of land) are picturesque towns, rolling farmland, Jordan Lake and an increasingly diverse economy. Among its assets are industrial and commercial businesses and a range of agricultural-based enterprises, including specialty farms whose harvest yields products that support businesses throughout the Research Triangle Region. By tradition, Chatham is supportive of entrepreneurs, emerging technologies and new businesses.

The county has one of North Carolina’s most vibrant arts communities and is home to the North Carolina Arts Incubator. Chatham is also home to Central Carolina Community College, a public two-year college, and is within easy access to major  Triangle and Piedmont universities, medical centers and Research Triangle Park.

The attributes and attractiveness of Chatham County offer innumerable opportunities to spur growth and provide the best environment in which to live, work and play. In addition to Chatham County's many attributes, the Town of Pittsboro has been certified as a designated Retirement Community.  For information related to living as a retiree in Chatham, follow this link - Retirement and Independent Living Communities.

Jordan Lake and its nearly 14,000 acres of water, is visited by more than one million each year.  Literally thousands make their way every year to Southern Supreme Gourmet Specialties in Bear Creek to enjoy gourmet food tours and to attend their Holiday Open House.  Southern Supreme is open year-round and welcomes groups and bus tours.  Old Fashioned Farmers’ Day, an event organized by the Silk Hope Ruritans, also attracts thousands annually. While in Chatham, you will not want to miss Carolina Tiger Rescue, an amazing wildlife sanctuary that attracts more than 13,000 guests per year.  There are many other places of interest that reveal the uniqueness of our community.
